The Quiter's Best Friend: The Singer 7285Q

Singer Patchwork Sewing Machine

Patchwork quilted garments are enchanting to look at, own and fun to create. In fact, earlier civilizations taught young girls that art of patchwork quilting as one of the first craft projects. While it is possible to undertake a project entirely by hand, the Singer Patchwork sewing machine will certainly go a long way in making the process easier for the experienced and new quilters alike.

Features

The Singer 7285Q is a patchwork quilting and sewing machine that offers the quilter a host of features. Some of these include:

  • An adjustable speed control to meet the needs of the user’s sewing speed
  • An automatic threader that makes threading a breeze
  • An endless buttonhole for the creation of long sides
  • 100 built-in stitches for quilting, essential, stretch, decorative and buttonholes
  • A programmable up/down needle that makes it easier for the quilter to remove fabric, and perfect for appliqueing as well
  • An extension table is included to offer a larger work area that is essential for any type of basic or larger sewing project
  • Bonus quilting feet are included to help encourage creative and quilting possibilities
  • A start/stop button that can be activated by unplugging the foot control
  • Horizontal threading for even thread feed, while reducing thread breakage and poor stitch formation
  • An automatic presser foot control that allows working on a wide variety of materials; from the lightest to the heaviest
  • Automatic lock function to reinforce patterns and prevent unraveling
  • A free arm that makes it easy to work on hard-to-reach areas like pant hems, collars and cuffs
  • A 750 stitches-per-minute sewing speed to complete projects faster

Specs

This computerized quilting and sewing machine brings to the table:

  • A 15j bobbin class
  • Uses 2045 and 2020 needles
  • An LED light bulb
  • Measures 14.5 inches long by 7 inches wide and 12 inches high
  • Weighs 14.6 lbs.

Pros

The Singer 7285Q is easy to set up and have the user sewing in no time. It also comes with a host of quilting accessories that help expand the user’s creative juices. It also features a two-button stitch selector and does the rest automatically. Unlike a mechanized sewing machine, this 7285Q takes off at a set speed making it easier to stitch from the word go. The decorative stitches are beautiful to work with and easy to set up using the included instruction manual.

Cons

While it sews well, this Singer patchwork sewing machine offers only about 5 inches of work space area between the needle and the right. In addition, quilters used to working with the old style zipper foot will find it a bit difficult to get used to the automatic presser foot. The light is also not enough and may require supplementing with an aftermarket lighting option.

All in all, the Singer 7285Q is a great purchase with a rigid support that inevitably increases its durability as well as enabling a skip-free sewing experience. The clear cover drop-in bobbin feature makes it easy for the user to see how much is left and the speeds definitely increase the sewing speed while working on any project. The bonus quilting accessories included are also a welcome feature that any beginner or experienced quilter will enjoy.
